Combined heat & power

Simultaneous extraction of mechanical energy and usable heat

Combined heat & power (CHP) is the simultaneous extraction of mechanical energy, which, generally, is immediately being converted into electric current, plus usable heat. The usable heat can be used for domestic hot water preparation as well as heating. CHP has gained increasing importance for the heat supply of residential districts, for multi-family and single-family homes respectively. The advantage of CHP is the reduced fuel demand as energy needs to be mustered only once for both - electricity and heat generation. In Germany, 25% of electricity is to be generated in CHP-installations by 2020 in order to save fuels, as well as to protect the environment and our climate.
